Apple Tunes Out Bangalore

The Times of India on Saturday reported that Apple was pulling back on its plans to open up a software development and support operation in India.

In March 2006 Apple had originally told media outlets that it was building a facility in Bangalore to house a call center "to help meet...growing service and support needs." At that time, The Times of India reported that the company would open the support operation with 1,500 people, then grow to 3,000 by the end of the year (later reported to be 600 people by year-end).

In the latest coverage, The Times reported that Apple had "commenced operations in April and hired about 30 people for its subsidiary, Apple Services India Pvt Ltd."

Then, on May 29, Apple announced the decision to lay off those employees. A spokesman said, "We have re-evaluated our plans and have decided to put our planned support centre growth in other countries."
