Tier 3 cities: The next battleground for talent

Large Indian companies have invested in Tier 3 cities such as Bhuvaneswar and Trivandrum over the last 10 years. The growth rate in these cities was slow compared to the larger cities. The reasons were primarily due to difficulty in attracting talent and the lack of infrastructure. The ecosystem in some of these cities has matured to a level where faster growth is possible. The physical and social infrastructure has improved significantly and so is the size of talent pool that is willing to move back to their home towns.

Over the next five years, the large MNCs and Indian companies will be fighting the talent war in Tier 3 cities. This will further push India’s IT boom and help maintain India’s cost competitiveness when compared to emerging countries such as China, Vietnam and Latin American countries.

The cities to watch out for will be Nagpur, Chandigarh, Trivandrum, Mysore and Cochin.

Tamil Nadu produces about 25% or so of India's Software Engineers. There are about 250 or so Engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu alone. Tamilians (like me - I took my first job after college in Madras, now Chennai in Delhi since that's where the jobs were!) have been migrating out of Tamil Nadu for about 50 years now. That's all about to change now - Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem and Tirunelveli are all being promoted as Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. These are the places where people get their education and migrate to Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi to get jobs. Now with the promotion of these cities and Chennai, about 180 licenses have been issued for new building new IT parks. Watch Tamil Nadu and Chennai! That's where the action will be since now all these graduates need not migrate elsewhere!

Very well put Nari. I graduated from Madurai University in 1988. Moved to Delhi in 1988, to the US in 1989 and been here ever since. Have been working with outsourced operations and there is definitely a move towards Coimbatore etc. I think this is a very important change that is occuring and I hope this is for the better..
